After weeks of speculation Premier Anna Bligh has called an early election for Queensland to be held on March 21st. The Premier cited the need for political stability and a mandate to solve the economic crisis as the reasons for going to the polls early.
LNP leader Lawrence Springborg criticised The Premier for not following through on previous statements that she would run a full term, which would have meant an election in September.
“What is Labor running from? After eleven years in office, Labor has called an early election,” he said today. “After eleven years in office, Ms Bligh only cares about one job: her own.
Greens MP Ronan Lee made similar comments about the early election.
“The premier is hoping to sneak back into government with an election held before unemployment becomes a major issue and her government’s weaknesses are exposed,” Mr Lee said.
The election also comes at a time when much of Queensland remains flooded, which may cause many voters to be unable to reach a polling booth on election day.
Meanwhile voters have just 5 days to enrol or update their registration details before the deadline or may face heavy fines.
